Marcel Rotter is an Associate Professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the University of Mary Washington. He holds dual affiliations with the Virginia Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German and the Schuetzingen-Fredericksburg Alliance, where he serves as president.
- Ph.D. in German Literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2004)
- M.A. in German and Russian from Paedagogische Hochschule Erfurt (1985)
Dr. Rotter’s research focuses on visual propaganda strategies during World Wars I and II, particularly in the context of German and U.S. propaganda. He actively explores intersections between advertising history and urban space, as evidenced by his recent presentations at the German Studies Association and the Institute for Polish Culture. His work also examines the role of German-Americans in World War I narratives.
As a native of East Germany (German Democratic Republic), Dr. Rotter brings a unique perspective to his academic and community engagement, including partnerships with institutions in Germany and eastern Europe.
