Marcel Berlinghoff

Dr. Marcel Berlinghoff is a historian and research associate at the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS) at the University of Osnabrück. He has been a member of IMIS since 2013 and serves as research coordinator and liaison office for the German Centre for Integration and Migration Research (DeZIM-FG). He is also a research associate in the BMBf-funded project "Flight and Refugee Research: Networking and Transfer" (FFVT).

His educational background includes studies in political science and medieval and modern history at Heidelberg, Mannheim, and Barcelona (UAB). He received his doctorate in 2011 from Heidelberg University with a dissertation on "The Europeanization of Migration Policy in the 1970s – The Recruitment Bans in the Federal Republic of Germany, France, and Switzerland."

Berlinghoff's research focuses on historical and contemporary aspects of migration policy. His work spans several key areas:

• Historical Migration Research, particularly European migration policy development
• Humanitarian Refugee Reception and contemporary refugee policies
• Labor Migration and recruitment policies
• Contemporary European History with a focus on migration
• Changing notions of privacy in the age of computerization

His scholarly output shows a strong focus on the historical development of European migration policies, with particular attention to the 1970s recruitment bans and their long-term implications. Recent work increasingly addresses contemporary refugee policies and the global refugee situation, as evidenced by his contributions to the "Report Global Flight" series. His research demonstrates an interdisciplinary approach, bridging historical analysis with contemporary policy concerns.

Berlinghoff has received scholarships from prestigious institutions including the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, the German Historical Institute in Paris, the Center for Comparative European Studies at the University of Cologne, and the DAAD. He is a member of the Council for Migration and co-coordinator of the DFG network "Fundamentals of Refugee Research."

He serves on the editorial boards of several important publications, including as co-editor of the Journal of Refugee Research (Z'Flucht) and the Journal of Migration Research (ZMF). He has also co-authored and edited several significant publications, including "Flight and Refugee Research. A Handbook for Research and Study" and the annual "Report Global Flight" series.

Berlinghoff is active in public engagement, having contributed to media outlets such as Deutschlandfunk, BR, SWR, WDR, and various newspapers. His work bridges academic research and public discourse on migration and refugee issues.
