About
Marc Schachter is Professor and Director of Studies (French) at Durham University's School of Modern Languages and Cultures, with affiliate membership at the Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies. His research spans sixteenth-century French literature, gender/sexuality studies, queer theory, and the cultural politics of translation.
Schachter's research explores early modern discourses on sexuality through classical reception, textual editing, and book history. Primary interests include:
- Erotics of friendship in classical/early modern texts
- Manuscript circulation of politically volatile literature
- Gender representation in Italian epic
- Early modern translations of classical texts
His publications demonstrate sustained focus on the intersection of power, sexuality, and textual transmission in early modern Europe, with recurring examination of Montaigne, La Boétie, and feminist reinterpretations of classical tropes.
Schachter supervises postgraduate researchers working on topics including queer theory applications to French Renaissance texts, disability studies in medieval literature, and eco-criticism in early modern England.
