Marc Mulholland

Marc Mulholland is a Tutor in Modern History at St Catherine's College, University of Oxford. His academic foundation includes a PhD in Irish History from Queen's University Belfast, supervised by Dr. Alvin Jackson, following undergraduate and MA studies at the same institution. He held an Irish Government Post-Doctoral Scholarship upon arriving in Oxford in 1998.

Mulholland's research bifurcates into two primary domains:

• Modern Irish history, particularly the 'national question', with studies on Ulster Unionism, the Provisional IRA, and a biography of Terence O'Neill
• History of political thought since the French Revolution, with current projects on the concept of the 'proletariat' and a biography of revolutionary Emmanuel Barthélemy

His publications demonstrate consistent engagement with revolutionary history and class analysis. He advocates for a rehabilitated Marxist framework in historical interpretation, emphasizing mid-range political theory responding to societal conflict.

Teaching responsibilities at Oxford include:

• History of the British Isles (Victorian Age, Crisis of Union, Multi-Cultural Islands)
• European Socialisms and British Radicalism
• Irish historiography and Northern Ireland special subjects

He currently advises DPhil student Michaela Moriarty and welcomes graduate students in modern Irish history or socialism.
