About
Marc Mayes holds multiple positions:
- Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Watershed Sciences at Utah State University
- Ecosystems and Remote Sensing Scientist at Spatial Informatics Group-Natural Assets Laboratory (SIG-NAL), serving as Landscape Domain Lead for the Santa Barbara Regional Wildfire Mitigation Program (RWMP)
- Research Associate at the Earth Research Institute, University of California-Santa Barbara
As an interdisciplinary Earth scientist specializing in Geology, Biogeochemistry, Hydrology, and Ecology, Dr. Mayes leverages remote sensing expertise to investigate vegetation community productivity, water and nutrient dynamics in natural ecosystems. His research examines how these systems mediate ecological processes and respond to disturbances including land-use changes, insect invasions, drought, and wildfire across forests, woodlands, and riparian zones in western North America and East Africa. A core component of his work involves technology training initiatives that empower local governments and community groups to implement environmental sensor networks and remote sensing analyses for ecosystem monitoring.
Dr. Mayes currently directs regional vegetation management for wildfire hazard mitigation through the Santa Barbara RWMP, while maintaining active research collaborations with SIG-NAL and UC Santa Barbara's Earth Research Institute.
