Prof. Dr. Marc Hanewinkel serves as Head of the Chair of Forestry Economics and Forest Planning at the Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources, University of Freiburg since October 2014. He also holds an Adjunct Professor position at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design, University of Toronto since 2024. Previously, he led the Research Unit on Forest Resources and Management at the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL) from 2011 to 2014.

He investigates economic aspects of climate change, bioenergy, forest transformation strategies, and uneven-aged forest management across Europe and Central America.
His publication record reveals a strong focus on climate change adaptation in forestry, with particular emphasis on economic evaluation of forest management strategies under uncertainty. Recent work examines tropical forest management in Central America, mixed-species plantations, carbon sequestration economics, and risk assessment methodologies for extreme weather events. His research consistently bridges ecological processes with economic decision-making frameworks.
