Marc Emil Pfeifer

Marc Emil Pfeifer is a Full Professor at HES-SO Valais-Wallis School of Engineering, where he serves as Head of the Diagnostic Systems Research Group within the Institute of Life Sciences. His work bridges academic research and practical diagnostic applications, with a strong focus on translating laboratory innovations into clinical tools.

Professor Pfeifer's research interests center on point-of-care diagnostics, with particular emphasis on traumatic brain injury detection, therapeutic drug monitoring, and in vitro diagnostic systems. His expertise spans bioanalysis, immunoassays, surface chemistry, and regulatory affairs, allowing him to address both the technical and commercialization aspects of diagnostic development.

His recent publications reveal a strong focus on multi-biomarker detection systems, particularly for mild traumatic brain injury. The research shows progression from fundamental surface chemistry and microarray fabrication techniques toward increasingly sophisticated integrated diagnostic platforms that can detect biomarkers at clinically relevant concentrations in complex biological samples like serum and whole blood.

As an active participant in the Swiss diagnostic community, Professor Pfeifer organizes and reports on the Swiss Symposium in Point-of-Care Diagnostics, helping to shape the national conversation around diagnostic innovation and implementation.
