Marc Daniel Ryser is an Associate Professor in the Department of Population Health Sciences at Duke University, with a joint appointment as an Associate Research Professor in the Department of Mathematics (Trinity College of Arts & Sciences). He is also a member of the Duke Cancer Institute. His research focuses on cancer early detection, particularly breast cancer overdiagnosis and overtreatment, using mathematical, statistical, and computational tools to analyze biological and clinical data. Ryser earned his Ph.D. in 2011 from McGill University, Canada.
He teaches a first-year seminar on the interdisciplinary intersection of mathematics and medicine. His work bridges mathematical modeling and clinical oncology, addressing critical questions about tumor progression and cancer screening outcomes. Key areas of research include ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) natural history, predictive models for cancer progression, and optimizing treatment decisions through personalized risk communication.
