Mara Livezey

Mara Livezey is an Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Detroit Mercy, affiliated with the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry within the College of Engineering & Science. She joined Detroit Mercy in 2018 as an instructor and transitioned to her current role in 2019. Her work emphasizes equitable teaching practices, social justice integration, and cancer biology research.

Dr. Livezey holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and a B.A. in Chemistry from Kalamazoo College. She teaches courses in biochemistry, organic chemistry, and drug mechanisms for non-majors. Her research focuses on small molecule anticancer drugs and the anticipatory unfolded protein response (aUPR), with a lab dedicated to inclusive science practices.

Her research interests blend cancer biology, drug development, and equitable STEM education. Recent work explores TRPM4's role in immunogenic cell death and the interplay between aUPR activation and autophagy. She also investigates integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) into biochemistry curricula to enhance student outcomes.

Dr. Livezey’s publications span molecular mechanisms of cancer therapy, DEI pedagogy, and green chemistry. She co-founded the Livezey Lab, fostering an inclusive environment prioritizing marginalized groups. Though no awards are listed, her work aligns with Detroit Mercy’s mission of community engagement and social justice.

Her advising and grants focus on undergraduate research experiences, with a particular emphasis on equitable grading strategies. The Livezey Lab collaborates with the American Medallic Sculpture Association to merge science and art in community service projects.
