Manuel Carreiras is the Scientific Director of the BCBL (Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language) in Donostia-San Sebastián, which holds the Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence accreditation (2016-2019 and 2022-2026). He holds positions as Ikerbasque Research Professor, Honorary Professor at University College London (UCL), and Distinguished Researcher at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). His work focuses on reading, bilingualism, and second language learning. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of Frontiers in Language Sciences and is an associate editor for multiple journals.
Research Interests:
- Neurobiological foundations of language
- Cognitive mechanisms in bilingualism and literacy
- Neurodegenerative processes affecting language
- Visual word recognition and sentence processing
- Sign language neurobiology
Grants & Projects: Principal Investigator of major grants including the ERC Advanced Grant Bi-Literacy, the COEDUCA Consolider-Ingenio2010 project, and the CORTICAL RHYTHMS ERC grant (2024). Funded by the European Research Council (ERC), Spanish Ministry of Science, and the La Caixa Foundation.
Awards: Received the Euskadi Research Prize (2015) and the Pascual Madoz National Research Prize in Social Sciences (2019).
Labs & Teams: Leads the Neurobiology of Language research group at BCBL, exploring neural correlates of language processing and bilingualism.
