Manish Chalana is a Professor at the University of Washington's Department of Urban Design & Planning within the College of Built Environments. He also holds adjunct appointments in Architecture and Landscape Architecture and is affiliated with the Jackson School of International Studies' South Asia Program.

His research focuses on diversity and social justice in historic preservation and urban planning. He has led international study programs in India, China, and Japan, emphasizing urban design, cultural resilience, and hazard mitigation. His publications appear in journals like Future Anterior and Journal of Planning History, and he co-edited Messy Urbanism: Understanding the 'Other' Cities of Asia (with Jeff Hou) and Heritage Conservation in Postcolonial India: Approaches and Challenges (with Ashima Krishna, 2021).
