About
Dr. Man-Yau Chan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at The Ohio State University, specializing in statistical meteorology and Earth system prediction. His research focuses on Ensemble Data Assimilation (EnsDA), the geospatial fusion of measurements and computer models critical for weather, ocean, and land forecasting systems. He earned his Ph.D. in Meteorology from Pennsylvania State University in 2022 and a B.S. in Physics from the National University of Singapore in 2017.
Research interests include:
- New applications of existing observations
- Developing novel EnsDA algorithms
- Creating improved Earth System datasets
- Error growth mechanisms in Earth System models
- Pedagogical approaches for training future EnsDA practitioners
Dr. Chan's recent publications demonstrate a focus on satellite data assimilation techniques, tropical meteorology, and high-resolution modeling. His work frequently explores ensemble Kalman filter variants, microwave/IR radiance assimilation, and tropical convective systems. Articles emphasize computational efficiency, forecast accuracy, and applications to extreme weather events like hurricanes Harvey and Irma.
Awards and honors:
- John C. Wyngaard Graduate Research Award (2022)
- First Place Oral Presentation, AMS Conference (2021)
- Second Place Graduate Research Showcase, Penn State (2021)
- Outstanding Oral Presentation, Midwest Student Conference (2020)
- Hans Neuberger Teaching Award (2019)
- Advanced Study Program Postdoctoral Fellowship, NCAR
Dr. Chan maintains active collaborations with the National Center for Atmospheric Research and has developed novel curricula for programming and meteorology education. His research group focuses on translating satellite observations into operational forecasting improvements.
