Professor Malcolm MacLeod serves as Senior Deputy Principal (Operational Strategy and External Affairs) at the University of Stirling, a position he assumed in January 2015. Previously, he held senior leadership roles at the University of St Andrews including Dean of the Faculty of Science, Provost of St Leonard's College, and Vice Principal for Internationalisation and External Relations.
Professor MacLeod holds a BSc and PhD and is a Chartered Psychologist who maintains a Chair in Experimental Psychology within the Faculty of Natural Sciences. His academic credentials are complemented by prestigious fellowships including the Royal Society of Arts and Commerce, British Psychological Society, and Higher Education Academy.
His research focuses on the executive control of memory with particular emphasis on the relationship between remembering and forgetting. This work has secured funding from major research bodies including the ESRC, British Academy, and Royal Society of Edinburgh. Beyond his core psychology research, Professor MacLeod maintains significant interests in university civic responsibility, enterprise development, entrepreneurship, and the role of higher education institutions as drivers of regional economic growth.
As Senior Deputy Principal, Professor MacLeod serves as academic lead for the University's involvement in the Stirling and Clackmannanshire City Regional Deal projects, which include the new Institute for Aquaculture and Global Food Security, and Scotland's International Centre for the Environment. He also serves as the institutional lead on corporate sustainability and has primary responsibility for the performance of academic departments, as well as leadership in equality, diversity and inclusion across the University.

Professor MacLeod maintains extensive external engagement, serving on the Scottish Land Commission's Leadership Taskforce on Derelict and Unused Land, and as a board member and trustee for various companies, organizations and trusts. He is a core member of the Clackmannanshire Commission focused on stimulating employment and improving quality of life in the region. Previously, he chaired the Marine Alliance for Science and Technology for Scotland (2015-2019) and contributed to the Scottish Government's review on postgraduate taught funding.
