Maisha Cooper

Dr. Maisha N. Cooper is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNC Charlotte), where she also serves as Assistant Dean of Engagement for the College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences. A U.S. Navy veteran and mother of three, her work focuses on criminal justice and social diversity, juvenile justice systems, and the intersection of religiosity and crime. She holds a Ph.D. (2018) from Sam Houston State University and advanced degrees from the University of Central Missouri.

Her research explores racial/ethnic disparities, gender dynamics in crime, restorative justice, and faith-based interventions. Recent publications appear in Journal of Criminal Justice Education, Crime & Delinquency, and Justice Quarterly. Dr. Cooper advocates for diversity in criminal justice and higher education, emphasizing equitable policies and mentorship. She teaches courses like Structural Racism in Criminal Justice and Juvenile Justice Systems, integrating pedagogical innovations to engage students.

Her scholarly work bridges theory and practice, addressing societal responses to crime through lenses of race, class, and gender. She collaborates on program evaluations and policy analyses, particularly regarding juvenile justice reform and police accountability.
