About
Dr. Maike Hofmann is a Researcher at the Department of Internal Medicine II, part of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Freiburg and the Medical Center – University of Freiburg. Her work focuses on understanding immune responses to viral hepatitis, particularly the role of killer cells in controlling viral infections and liver cancer. She leads research groups within three Collaborative Research Centers: SFB 1160 (IMPATH), SFB 1479 (OncoEscape), and TRR 179 (Hepatitis Virus Infections).
Her habilitation project investigates immune mechanisms against hepatitis viruses, supported by the Margarete von Wrangell Habilitation Program. Recent studies include contributions to understanding SARS-CoV-2 immune memory and mRNA vaccine dynamics, published in Nature Medicine and Nature.
Recipient of the prestigious Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize (2022), Germany’s top award for young researchers, she has received €20,000 in prize funding. Her research bridges immunology, virology, and clinical medicine, with a focus on translational applications in infectious diseases and cancer.
