About
Mahmoud Rasras is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) and a Global Network Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at NYU Tandon. He holds a PhD in Physics from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, and has over 11 years of industrial research experience at Bell Labs/Alcatel-Lucent. His research focuses on silicon photonics (SiPh), integrated circuits for mode- and polarization-division multiplexing, and hybrid integration of 2D materials. Key areas include neuromorphic computing, opto-MEMS accelerometers, and high-speed photonic systems.
He has authored over 200 journal/conference papers and holds 34 US patents. Notable achievements include the Roger A. Haken Best Student Paper Award (1999) and Fellowships with the AIIA Industry Academy. Rasras leads the Photonics Research Lab at NYUAD and previously directed the SRC/GlobalFoundries Center for Excellence on Integrated Photonics at Masdar Institute.
His research interests span photonic components for optical networks, MEMS-based sensors, and applications in neuromorphic computing. Recent work includes advancements in 2D material integration for tunable photonic systems and security assessment of MEMS gyroscopes under acoustic attacks.
