Maggie Coates is an Assistant Professor and Head of Subject in the Department of Nursing, Midwifery, and Health at Northumbria University. She leads learning and teaching across Professional Statutory Regulatory Body (PSRB)-aligned programs, including Specialist Community Public Health Nursing and Continuous Professional Development initiatives. Her research focuses on public health interventions in childhood obesity, healthcare communication, and nursing education.
Dr. Coates holds a PhD in Nursing (2022), MA in Nursing (1998), and BSc (Hons) in Health (1993). She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and a registered nurse with over 17 years of NHS experience. Her research explores parent-health visitor interactions around infant weight management and the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme.
Her publications address qualitative studies in healthcare communication, nursing education, and academic supervision. She has contributed to policy-relevant research on public health workforce readiness and child health interventions.
