About
Dr. Madlene Nussbaum is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Geography at Utrecht University's Faculty of Geosciences. Her research focuses on applying data science, machine learning, and geocomputation to soil mapping and environmental analysis. She holds a PhD in Geosciences from ETH Zurich (2017) and an MSc in Geography from the University of Zurich (2011). Her work emphasizes statistical approaches for predicting soil properties and developing spatial sampling frameworks.
Key areas include:
- Machine learning for soil texture and organic carbon prediction
- High-resolution soil mapping using large environmental covariate datasets
- Evaluation of spatial validation statistics and uncertainty visualization
Her research has produced influential papers like the 2018 'Random forest as a generic framework for predictive modeling' and 2023 studies on hierarchical soil pH mapping. She currently teaches 'Data analysis and statistics 2' and serves as Associate Editor for the European Journal of Soil Science.
