About
Maddy Kroot is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, starting August 2025. She earned her Ph.D. in Geography from Clark University in 2025 and holds a B.A. in Geography and Linguistics from Dartmouth College (2019). She previously completed a Post-Baccalaureate Fellowship in Geography at Dartmouth College.
Her research explores the intersections of political ecology, energy geographies, critical infrastructure studies, and science and technology studies. She focuses on environmental politics of energy transitions, particularly electricity infrastructure, analyzing how decarbonization efforts trigger 'green-on-green' conflicts between climate goals, public participation in energy governance, and rural landscape conservation. Her doctoral work examined community opposition to high-voltage transmission lines in northern New England designed to import Quebecois hydroelectricity.
Kroot has received significant recognition including:
- National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship
- Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarship
Her research has been funded by the NSF Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement program, Edna Bailey Sussman Foundation, and university grants. Outside academia, she volunteers for Appalachian Trail maintenance in New Hampshire.
