Maddie Weinstein is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Puget Sound. She holds a PhD from UC Berkeley (2021), awarded for her dissertation Metric Algebraic Geometry, which received the Friedman Memorial Prize. Her academic journey includes postdoctoral positions as a UC President's Postdoctoral Fellow at UC San Diego (Summer 2021) and an NSF Postdoc at Stanford University (2021-2023). She teaches courses in Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Algebraic Geometry.
- Education:
- BS from Harvey Mudd College (2016)
- PhD from UC Berkeley (2021)
Maddie's research bridges algebraic geometry with data science, focusing on applied algebraic geometry, distance optimization, and topological data analysis. Her work explores the geometry of data through algebraic statistics, real algebraic geometry, and persistent homology. Current projects include equivariant dimensionality reduction and curvature analysis of algebraic surfaces.
Her research outputs span publications on Voronoi cells, bottleneck degrees of algebraic varieties, and statistical properties of number-theoretic decompositions. Collaborations include interdisciplinary teams across mathematics, computer science, and data science disciplines.
- Scientific Awards:
- Friedman Memorial Prize (dissertation)
- NSF We Are Mathematics video competition honorable mention
As an AAAS IF/THEN Ambassador, she actively promotes STEM education through virtual guest speaking engagements and public outreach initiatives, including creating educational videos that explain complex mathematical concepts to general audiences.
