Maaike Harbers is a Lecturer in Artificial Intelligence & Society at the Creating 010 knowledge center of Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. She holds an MSc in Artificial Intelligence and MA in Philosophy from the University of Groningen, and a PhD in Explainable AI from Utrecht University (2011). Her research develops methods and tools for responsible AI design, focusing on ethical deployment across creative industries, healthcare, and government.
Harbers leads the RAAIT research program (Responsible Applied AI), a multi-institutional initiative with universities in Rotterdam, Amsterdam, and Utrecht. She investigates how AI affects inclusivity, autonomy, and sustainability, emphasizing stakeholder collaboration and organizational implementation of ethical frameworks. Key projects include:
