About
Dr. Mike Buxton is an Associate Professor and Section Head of Resource Engineering at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, Delft University of Technology. He holds a PhD in carbonate sedimentology and has extensive industry experience in mining exploration, technical due diligence, and project management. His research focuses on sensor-based material characterization for mining applications, including ore-waste separation, exploration drilling, and pre-processing waste discrimination.
Education: PhD in Carbonate Sedimentology (1992), Postdoctoral research at Rand Afrikaans University, followed by 16 years in the South African mining industry. Currently supervises 3 PhD students and leads EU-funded projects like REAL TIME MINING and STOICISM.
Research interests include sensor technologies, mineral processing optimization, and sustainable post-mining landscapes. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society of South Africa.
Recent projects: Sensor integration for real-time mining, calcined industrial minerals characterization, and material fingerprinting for process improvement. His work spans collaborations with international researchers, industry partners, and institutions like RWTH Aachen and Aalto University.
Grants & Projects: European FP7 Project STOICISM (2011), Horizon 2020 REAL TIME MINING (gold ore separation), and TRIM4Post-Mining (sustainable post-mining transitions). Supervised over 15 MSc/BSc theses on topics ranging from LIBS ore analysis to hydraulic fracturing.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Resource Engineering Section, collaborates on interdisciplinary teams for sensor-based mining solutions, and contributes to the European EMMEP program.
