M Nirmalan is Professor of UG Medical Education & Training at Manchester Medical School, University of Manchester, and Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine at Manchester Royal Infirmary. He maintains dual clinical (7 sessions/week) and academic (5 sessions/week) roles. Previously, he served as Vice Dean for Social Responsibility and Public Engagement (2016-2024) and interim Deputy Dean (2022-2023) in the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health.
His research focuses on:
- Global Health: Mitigating challenges of major limb loss in post-conflict settings (Uganda) and public health interventions in Kenyan informal settlements
- Trauma Biomarkers: Developing cell-based and circulating biomarkers for risk stratification using flow cytometry and mass spectrometry
- Creative Arts: Communicating health messages in deprived communities
His recent publications (2023-2025) demonstrate strong focus on global public health interventions, critical care therapeutics, and digital health technologies. Research consistently addresses healthcare challenges in resource-limited settings and innovative clinical monitoring solutions.
He leads significant grants including an AHRC/GCRF-funded limb loss project (£220K) in Uganda and a GCRF face mask efficacy study (£103K) in Kenya. A £1M MRC proposal for a UK-Uganda-Sri Lanka limb loss network is pending.
He directs the CC&C Module and collaborates internationally with researchers in Uganda (Gulu University), Kenya (KMRI), and Egypt (Cairo University). Maintains visiting professorships in Critical Care (Cairo) and Post-Conflict Studies (Gulu).
