About
Dr. Lynn Paterson is an Associate Professor at Heriot-Watt University, affiliated with the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences and the Institute of Biological Chemistry, Biophysics and Bioengineering. She joined the university in 2007 as an RCUK Academic Fellow. Her research focuses on biophotonics, including optical manipulation, microfluidics, and nanoparticle sensors, applied to biosensing, biodiscovery, and biomedical devices. She holds roles such as Deputy Director of EPS Postgraduate Research and coordinates Year Four Physics teaching and undergraduate projects.
Paterson earned a BSc from Glasgow University and a PhD from St Andrews University. Her work integrates optics and photonics to isolate cells, design optical tweezers, and develop biomedical tools. Recent research includes studies on DNA damage from far-UV light, 3D microrheology, and energy storage applications of metal-organic frameworks.
Her publications span topics like optical tweezers, microrheology, and nanotechnology, with a focus on biomedical and environmental applications. She actively participates in academic activities, including organizing conferences on optical trapping technologies and serving as an external examiner for PhD theses. Her lab, based in the David Brewster Building, develops innovative optical instruments for biological systems.
Paterson’s contributions align with sustainable development goals through biomedical innovations and environmental studies. She engages in outreach, such as the 'Girls into STEM 2024' initiative, promoting science education.
