Luwei Ying

Luwei Ying is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of California, Los Angeles. She holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Washington University in St. Louis and dual B.A. degrees in International Politics and Journalism & Communication from Tsinghua University.

Her research focuses on international relations with specialization in civil conflict dynamics, political violence, and quantitative methodology. She investigates ideological propagation in militant organizations, territorial control strategies, and the historical legacies of border institutions. Her methodological innovations include text-as-data approaches for ideological measurement.

Ying has received significant recognition including the 2022 Walter Isard Award for best dissertation in Peace Science, Best Paper in International Relations Award, Pi Sigma Alpha Award, and Best Poster Award at PolMeth XXXVII. Her work appears in leading journals including American Political Science Review and Political Analysis.
