About
Prof. Dr. Lutz Hecht is an Adjunct Professor for Impact Petrology at Freie Universität Berlin and a Senior Research Scientist at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin (Leibniz Institute for Evolution and Biodiversity Research). His research focuses on the petrology and geochemistry of impact crater rocks, meteorites, and fluid-rock interactions in igneous systems. He leads microanalytical facilities including SEM and electron microprobe laboratories.
He obtained his PhD in petrology and geochemistry from TU München (1993) and habilitation in 2001. His work includes studies of major impact structures like Chicxulub, Ries, and Sudbury, with recent emphasis on urban micrometeorite analysis and layered intrusion petrogenesis. Key projects involve projectile-target interactions in impact experiments and crustal fluid processes in Bushveld Complex.
Recent publications highlight contributions to understanding impact melt dynamics, shock metamorphism, and the geochemical evolution of meteoritic materials. He collaborates internationally on projects funded by DFG and EU initiatives, advancing knowledge in planetary geology and structural geodynamics.
