Lutz Beat

Prof. Dr. Lutz Beat is a W3 Professor for Physiological Chemistry and Director of the Institute of Physiological Chemistry at the University Medical Center, Mainz. He is an Ordinary Member of the Academy of Europe (Section: Physiology & Neuroscience) since 2015. His work focuses on endocannabinoid signaling systems and their roles in brain function, behavior, and disease.

• Education: PhD in Biochemistry (ETH Zurich, 1989), Postdoctoral Fellowships at Harvard Medical School (1990–1995), and extensive training in Germany and Switzerland.
• Research Interests: CB1 receptor function in neural circuits, cannabinoid pharmacology, stress resilience mechanisms, and lipid signaling pathways.

His discoveries include the dichotomic role of CB1 receptors in excitatory/inhibitory neurons, mitochondrial CB1 receptors, and novel endocannabinoid-like compounds such as pepcan. This research impacts understanding of anxiety, neuroprotection, and cannabinoid therapies.
