About
Associate Professor Luis Afonso is a distinguished researcher and educator at Deakin University's School of Life and Environmental Sciences, where he serves as Deputy Director of the Bachelor of Science program. With over a decade of experience at Deakin and prior research leadership at the British Columbia Centre for Aquatic Health Sciences in Canada, his career spans significant contributions to marine sciences, fish physiology, and innovative applications of nanotechnology in environmental contexts.
His research interests encompass fish stress physiology, reproductive biology, aquaculture, and the emerging field of nanotoxicology. Afonso employs an integrative approach combining immunology, endocrinology, and multi-omics techniques to investigate critical fish health issues. More recently, his work has expanded into developing nanobiosensors for environmental monitoring and assessing the impacts of nanomaterials on aquatic ecosystems and agricultural systems.
The analysis of his 15 most recent publications reveals a strong interdisciplinary focus bridging marine biology, environmental science, and nanotechnology. His research demonstrates consistent innovation in developing novel methodologies for environmental monitoring while addressing practical challenges in aquaculture and sustainable agriculture. His work on nanoparticle impacts spans multiple biological systems from cellular models to whole organisms across aquatic and terrestrial environments.
