About
Dr. Luigi Sedda serves as Senior Lecturer in Spatial Epidemiology at Lancaster Medical School, Lancaster University, where he leads the Lancaster Ecology and Epidemiology Group. His academic profile centers on geospatial disease modeling and vector-borne pathogen dynamics with significant contributions to public health policy.
His research examines spatio-temporal mapping of vector-borne diseases using biological frameworks, vector-wind-borne disease transmission mechanisms, and control strategies for emerging zoonotic threats. Methodologically, he integrates advanced geospatial analytics with epidemiological field studies to address critical gaps in disease surveillance systems across diverse ecological settings.
Recent publications (2025) reveal a strategic research portfolio spanning mosquito-borne disease challenges in Europe/US, malaria hotspot identification protocols, cancer-geography relationships in the UK, and West Nile virus epidemiology in the Mediterranean. This work consistently emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration between entomologists, public health officials, and policymakers.
Scientific recognition includes:
- IPUMS research award
- NIHR CRN Greater Manchester’s Evening of Excellence 2021
- Prize for best paper in Morecambe Bay Medical Journal (2022)
He actively supervises doctoral candidates including Mujahid Nouredayem and Cecile Spychala while directing major research initiatives funded by DSI, BBSRC, and EU Horizon 2020. Current projects address Anopheles stephensi expansion in Africa, cancer inequality mapping in Northwest England, and adaptive mosquito surveillance frameworks.
The Lancaster Ecology and Epidemiology Group under his leadership bridges ecological science with epidemiological practice, focusing on real-world applications for disease prevention in changing global environments.
