About
Lucy Kaufman is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Alabama. She holds a PhD from Yale University (2014) and currently serves as Director of Undergraduate Studies. Her research focuses on early modern British history, particularly popular politics, migration patterns, and the creation of national identities through religious and urban frameworks.
Her notable work includes the book *A People’s Reformation* (2023), which examines grassroots religious institutionalization in Elizabethan England. She has received significant recognition, including the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Public Engagement (2017) for her transformative work on the National Trust’s *The Vyne* restoration project, blending scholarship with immersive heritage interpretation. This project involved interdisciplinary collaboration to recreate Tudor-era sensory experiences through animation, scent, and soundscapes.
Dr. Kaufman’s research interests span microeconomic history, early modern urban spaces, and religious migration. She teaches courses such as Reformation Europe (HY 444) and History of London (HY 497), integrating primary sources and material culture analysis.
Her current projects include *Ordering the Strangers*, exploring European immigration in early modern England, and a chapter on *Religious Cultures* for *The New Cambridge History of Britain*. She has held fellowships at Durham University and grants from institutions like the Folger Library and UK’s Heritage Interpretation sector.
