About
Lucy Hathaway serves as Group Leader and Principal Investigator at the Institute for Infectious Diseases (IFIK) within the Medical Faculty of the University of Bern. Her research focuses on pneumococcal biology and host-pathogen interactions in the human respiratory tract.
Her primary research interests include:
- Infectious Diseases
- Microbiology
- Bacterial Pathogenesis
- Microbial Communication
- Respiratory Tract Infections
Dr. Hathaway leads investigations into peptide-mediated bacterial communication between Streptococcus pneumoniae and other microbiota species, and explores colonization resistance mechanisms against pneumonia. Her team includes PhD students Janine Lux and Linus Rechsteiner, and early postdoc Hannah Agnew, with collaborative work conducted alongside Dr. Felix Dube at the University of Cape Town.
Her research addresses critical challenges in antibiotic resistance by examining microbiota interactions to develop novel therapeutic strategies for bacterial pneumonia prevention and treatment.
