Lucy Basterra is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Humanities and Social Science at the University of Brighton. With over a decade of experience as a registered Social Worker and Practice Educator, her work focuses on domestic abuse, trauma, and systemic barriers in service access for vulnerable populations. She teaches across BSc and MSc programmes and became Joint Course Lead for the MSc/PGDip programme in 2022.

Her research explores women’s experiences of domestic abuse, complex needs (including homelessness, substance misuse, and mental ill-health), and the efficacy of social work education in preparing students to address these challenges. She has designed training programmes for B&H City Council and contributed to systems change initiatives through the Fulfilling Lives Project.

Basterra previously served as Operational Manager and Systems Change Lead for the Fulfilling Lives Project, a national initiative supporting individuals with multiple and complex needs. Her practice experience spans substance misuse treatment settings and domestic abuse advocacy, shaping her interdisciplinary approach to social work education and systemic reform.
