Lucia Trimbur is an Associate Professor of Sociology and American Studies at John Jay College and the CUNY Graduate Center, with a Global Fellowship at the University of Edinburgh. She holds a PhD in African American Studies and Sociology from Yale University (2006), MA from University of London (1999), and BA from Brown University (1997). Her research explores intersections of embodied practices, racial/gender/class hierarchies, and power structures, with a focus on boxing subcultures, concussion crises in football, and medical racism.
Her seminal work Come Out Swinging (2013) examines boxing culture at Gleason’s Gym, while her upcoming Lights Out (Columbia UP) analyzes NFL concussion policies. She has published in American Studies Journal, Contexts, and Antipode, and contributed to media outlets like NBC Think and Urban Omnibus. She teaches courses on social theory, criminal justice, and interdisciplinary studies of violence and inequality.
Trimbur’s awards include the Fulbright Bicentennial Chair and recognition for her book’s sociological contribution. Her work bridges academic and public spheres, addressing urgent issues like athlete activism, medical accountability, and the political dimensions of sport.
