Luca Lavagna
Assistant Professor · Materials Science and Technology
Polytechnic University of TurinAbout
Luca Lavagna is a fixed-term assistant professor and researcher at the Department of Applied Science and Technology (DISAT), Politecnico di Torino, Italy. He is actively involved in materials science and engineering research, particularly in advanced composites and sustainable construction materials. He teaches across multiple engineering programs, including Civil, Building, Aerospace, and Materials Engineering, and serves as a PhD tutor.
His research interests include carbon fibers, carbon nanotubes, graphene, polymer composites, cement-based composites, and nanomaterials engineering, with a strong focus on sustainability and energy applications. These areas align with UN Sustainable Development Goals 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and are supported by expertise in ERC sectors such as engineering of carbon materials, composites, ceramics, and nanomaterials.
His recent publications (2024–2025) demonstrate a clear trend toward sustainable and high-performance materials, including bio-based composites, recycled tire rubber in cement, biochar fillers, and thermochemical energy storage materials. These works reflect interdisciplinary innovation in materials for civil and energy applications.
Scientific Awards:
- Polito Quality Award (2017)
- Polito Quality Award (2018)
Luca Lavagna supervises PhD students Carlo Amata (Materials Science and Technology) and Alessio Mondello (Energetics). He is a member of the research team for the LObSTER project (2023–2026), funded under Italy’s PNRR Mission 4, which aims to develop affordable, loss-free seasonal thermal energy storage for civil applications. He has contributed to teaching as a course collaborator in numerous programs and has served as a guest editor for the journal Processes (2021). Additionally, he holds a national and international patent on a new methodology for obtaining graphene oxide and oxidizing nanotubes, developed with colleagues Simone Musso and Matteo Pavese.
He is affiliated with the Institute of Science and Engineering of Materials for Innovative Technologies (DISAT), where he conducts research on functional and composite materials. His work bridges academic research with industrial and societal applications, particularly in clean energy and sustainable infrastructure.
