About
Prof. Dr. Luc Patthey is the Head of the Laboratory for Advanced Spectroscopy and X-ray Sources (LSX) at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland. He also holds the academic position of Titular Professor at the University of Fribourg. His work spans the development of advanced instrumentation for photon science, ultrafast spectroscopy, and the study of quantum materials using synchrotron and free-electron laser sources.
Education: Luc Patthey completed all his academic degrees at the University of Lausanne, including his PhD, where he focused on angle-resolved photoemission and photoelectron diffraction on oxides and semiconductor surfaces.
Research Interests: His scientific focus includes:
- Design and implementation of novel instrumentation for X-ray sources, including undulators, optics, and diagnostics
- Ultrafast dynamics in condensed matter and quantum materials
- Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) and high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy
- Electronic structure of strongly correlated systems
- Development of beamlines and experimental endstations for SwissFEL and SLS
Projects and Facilities: Prof. Patthey has led or contributed to major projects including:
- SwissFEL Aramis hard X-ray beamline
- SwissFEL Athos soft X-ray beamline (Phase II)
- Swiss Light Source (SLS) instrumentation
- First experiments at LCLS (Linac Coherent Light Source, SLAC)
Institutional Roles: In addition to his leadership at LSX, he is a member of the strategy group “Free Electron Lasers” of LEAPS (League of European Accelerator-based Photon Sources) and has served on advisory committees for facilities such as Max IV in Sweden and Diamond Light Source in the UK.
Publications: His work has been published in leading journals such as Nature, Nature Materials, Physical Review Letters, and Journal of Synchrotron Radiation, with a focus on experimental advances in X-ray science and condensed matter physics.
