Luc Arnal

Luc Arnal is an Assistant Professor and co-head of the Auditory Cognition and Communication research team at the Institut Pasteur in Paris. His research focuses on understanding how the human brain processes communication signals—verbal, non-verbal, and musical—by integrating auditory, visual, and emotional information. He employs a multidisciplinary approach combining psychoacoustic experiments, neuroimaging (fMRI, EEG), and neurocomputational modeling.

His research interests include:

• Neural oscillations and predictive coding in speech and music perception
• Audiovisual integration, especially in hearing-impaired individuals
• The brain's response to 'rough' sounds and their impact on stress and alertness
• Cortical reorganization in response to hearing loss
• Implications for sensory deficiencies and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s

His recent publications (2019–2025) reflect a strong focus on auditory perception mechanisms, particularly the role of brain rhythms and predictive processing. The articles demonstrate trends in cognitive neuroscience, sensory processing, and translational applications for hearing disorders.

He mentors several students, including PhD candidates and undergraduates, contributing to training the next generation of cognitive neuroscientists.

He collaborates with Diane Lazard and is involved in ongoing projects such as studying audiovisual illusions and developing diagnostic tools for age-related hearing loss.
