Lubbert Dijkhuizen

Prof. Lubbert Dijkhuizen is a Full Professor in Microbiology at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Science and Engineering, where he leads the Microbial Physiology Research Group. With over 40 years of carbohydrate research expertise, he founded CarbExplore Research BV to develop novel polysaccharides and sweetener technologies.

His work spans microbial physiology of Gram-positive bacteria, enzyme engineering (glucansucrases, Baeyer-Villiger monooxygenases), and carbohydrate bioprocessing. Current research focuses on enzymatic synthesis of slow-digesting prebiotics and reducing Stevia aftertaste via transglucosylation.

Dijkhuizen previously directed the Carbohydrate Competence Center and Kluyver Centre for Genomics of Industrial Fermentation. He received the Wubbo Ockels Prize (2006) and holds 25 patents in biocatalysis applications.
