About
Louis C. Gerstenfeld is a Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research Professor in the Department of Biochemistry & Cell Biology at Boston University's Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. He also holds affiliations with the Center for Regenerative Medicine and Evans Center for Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research. His expertise spans skeletal tissue biology, bone histomorphometry, and fracture healing mechanisms.
Gerstenfeld earned a PhD from Boston University School of Medicine and dual undergraduate degrees (BA and BS) from Pennsylvania State University. His research focuses on genomic and transcriptomic factors influencing bone quality, fracture healing diagnostics, and extracellular matrix proteins. He has led over 35 funded grants, including NIH and DOD projects on osteoporosis, bone regeneration, and systems genetics.
His work integrates molecular biology, bioengineering, and clinical research to address skeletal repair challenges. Key contributions include pioneering osteoblast culture techniques, cloning bone matrix proteins, and developing serum-based fracture healing diagnostics. Current efforts explore genetic determinants of bone strength and regenerative therapies.
Gerstenfeld has served on NIH review panels and collaborated with NASA/DOD on skeletal biology research. His lab investigates osteogenesis, angiogenesis, and the role of metabolic pathways in bone repair. He maintains active partnerships with industry (e.g., Acceleron Pharma) and academic institutions.
