Prof. Dr. Louis Bosshart (born January 7, 1944) served as a Full Professor of Communication and Media Studies at the University of Fribourg from 1982 until his retirement in 2013, concurrently leading the Department of Communication and Media Research (DCM). He was pivotal in expanding the department into a multi-faculty unit with six professorships and numerous research positions. His academic journey included studies and a doctorate at the University of Fribourg, followed by research and teaching roles in the UK, USA, and Germany.
- Education: Studied German and Journalism at the University of Fribourg (1965–1972), with a habilitation in 1979 on television entertainment dynamics.
- Research Focus: Pioneered media entertainment studies, journalism ethics, and the role of media in society. His works include groundbreaking analyses on women in mass media and media policy.
- Visiting Roles: Held visiting professorships at Stanford University (1993–1994), Baylor University, and the University of Klagenfurt. Taught summer courses on media entertainment at Stanford.
- Awards & Roles: Honorary Doctorate, member of the Swiss Federal Commission for Women’s Issues (1981–1987), and President of the Swiss Society for Communication and Media Studies (1984–1993).
