Lou Nel

Lou Nel is an Associate Professor at the School of Computer Science, Carleton University. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo (1988), an M.Math, and a B.Eng. from Carleton University. His research focuses on computer applications to music, object-oriented programming, and software engineering. He currently teaches the Winter 2025 course '2406 A&B Fundamentals of Web Applications' as an online blended course. Notable tools he developed include the 'Database Normalizer' web application for functional dependencies and entity-relationship modeling. While he no longer supervises COMP 4905 honours projects, past projects included topics like 'Realtime Rhythms for Drummers (and Their Friends)'.

Dr. Nel’s work bridges computational methods with creative fields, particularly in music technology. His teaching emphasizes practical web application fundamentals, blending theoretical concepts with hands-on development.
