About
Liyang Liu is a Research Professor at Chalmers University of Technology, leading the Lignin Science and Technology research group. His work focuses on transforming lignin and wood biomass into advanced sustainable materials such as polymeric foams, adhesives, nanocomposites, and 3D printing materials through greener and efficient methods. The group prioritizes understanding lignin structure-properties relationships using polymer science principles to design functional materials. They develop advanced characterization and processing techniques, while training researchers to contribute to Sweden's sustainable development goals. Liu is an active member of WWSC, TreeSearch, and ACS.
Research interests include biomaterials, polymer science, and sustainable chemistry with a core emphasis on lignin valorization. His group explores applications in renewable materials, corrosion-resistant coatings, and bio-based foams while advancing circular economy principles. Recent work highlights innovations in lignin nanoparticles for plant protection, fluorescent hydrogels for metal detection, and self-foaming bio-based materials.
Liu's publications span 2025 to 2011, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to materials science and lignocellulosic biomass utilization. Collaborations focus on developing scalable, eco-friendly processes for industrial applications. Current efforts target materials with enhanced recyclability and multifunctional properties to address global sustainability challenges.
