Lise Rye is a Professor of Contemporary European History at NTNU's Department of Historical and Classical Studies, Faculty of Humanities. She concurrently held an Adjunct Professorship at the University of Agder (2021-2023). Her research focuses on European integration, EU-EFTA dynamics, Norway's EU relations, and democratic legitimacy in Europe. She leads NTNU's European Studies programs and coordinates initiatives like the Jean Monnet module on differentiated integration.
- Education: Ph.D. in History from NTNU (2004), with expertise in EU institutional history and Nordic-EU relations.
Research Interests: European integration history, EEA agreement analysis, Euroscepticism, democracy and rule of law in EU governance. She explores how integration processes impact national and supranational democracy, with a focus on Norway's unique position outside EU membership.
Recent work emphasizes Norway's autonomy within the EEA framework and EU legitimacy challenges. Her book A Short Introduction to EU History (2022) contextualizes EU evolution for Norwegian audiences.
Grants and Projects: RECONNECT (EU-funded study on democracy/rule of law mismatches, 2018-22), EFTA-EC archival research (1973-1994), and the Jean Monnet module on differentiated integration (2018-21).
