Dr. Lisa Newman is a Senior Lecturer and Deputy Head of Department (Learning & Teaching) in the School of Science at RMIT University, part of the STEM College. Her research focuses on sensory and consumer science, particularly how taste and smell influence dietary behaviors in populations with sensory challenges, including children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the elderly, and astronauts. She leads projects on sustainable food introduction through sensory play and digital simulations. Newman has been at RMIT since 2017, previously holding roles at Deakin University. She coordinates courses like Human Sensory Evaluation and Applied Nutrition, integrating her research into teaching. Her work has been featured in media outlets such as ABC News and Space Connect.
Research interests span food sustainability, sensory perception in extreme environments, and interdisciplinary approaches using digital technologies. She collaborates on grants like the COSMIC-CUISINE project for astronaut wellbeing and sustainable food development.
