Lisa Law is an Associate Professor in the College of Science and Engineering at James Cook University (JCU), and a key member of the Centre for Disaster Solutions. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on tropical urbanism, liveability, public space design, and the intersection of culture and environment in Southeast Asia and tropical Australia. She founded the Tropical Urbanism and Design Lab, an interdisciplinary group addressing urban challenges in tropical regions. Prior to JCU, she held roles at institutions including the Australian National University, University of Western Sydney, and National University of Singapore.
Her work explores urban design for climate resilience, the role of arts in placemaking, and the socio-environmental impacts of urban development. Recent projects include studies on amenity migration in Cairns, school garden pedagogy, and post-pandemic urban planning strategies. She has contributed to masterplans like Greenvale Town Centre and the State of the Arts in Cairns reports.
Research interests span environmental generational amnesia, qualitative GIS applications, and sustainable tropical housing. Her articles analyze topics such as rental housing insecurity, food education, and cultural tourism dynamics in Southeast Asia. She actively engages in community-driven research, emphasizing participatory methodologies and stakeholder collaboration in urban development initiatives.
