Lisa K. Neuman

Lisa K. Neuman is an Associate Professor of Anthropology and Native American Studies at the University of Maine. She holds a Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology (2002) and a Graduate Certificate in Women’s Studies from Duke University, along with an M.A. in Cultural Anthropology (2000) and a B.A. in Anthropology from Pomona College (1989).

Her research explores the dynamic interplay between Native American diaspora histories, urban-tribal relationships, and contemporary identity politics. Key areas include American Indian education systems, cultural revitalization, and intersections of gender studies with Indigenous sovereignty movements, particularly in Oklahoma and Maine contexts.

Recent publications focus on Wabanaki basketry as economic enterprise, Bacone College's cultural identity negotiations, and the evolving definitions of 'Indianness' in 21st-century America. These works demonstrate recurring themes of cultural resilience and adaptive identity formation.
