About
Liping Huang is a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and the Associate Vice President for Research at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). She holds leadership roles, including former Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs in the School of Engineering (2018–2024). Huang earned her B.E. and M.E. from Zhejiang University (1996, 1999) and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2004). Her postdoctoral work at the University of Michigan and NC State preceded her appointment at RPI in 2008.
Her research focuses on Liquids and Glasses, Ceramic Materials, Nanomaterials, and Energy Materials, with emphasis on environmental barrier coatings, mechanical properties under extreme conditions, and computational modeling. She leads the Center for Future Energy Systems (CFES) and Center for Materials, Devices, and Integrated Systems (CMDIS).
Huang’s work has yielded over 120 publications in Materials Science and Physics journals. Her awards include the NSF CAREER Award (2013), DTRA Young Investigator Award (2009), and recognition as a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society. Her grants and collaborations emphasize advancing materials for aerospace, energy, and environmental applications.
Her advising and grants span interdisciplinary projects in glass toughness, CMAS corrosion, and machine learning-driven material design. Ongoing research explores ductile glass composites and nanoparticle-based materials, aiming to bridge computational predictions and practical applications.
