About
Dr Lipin Loo is a Group Leader in RNA Therapies and Co-leader of the Single Cell Biology node at the Charles Perkins Centre, University of Sydney. He holds affiliations with the School of Life and Environmental Sciences and the Centre for Drug Discovery Innovation. He earned his PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Iowa (2013) and completed postdoctoral training at the University of North Carolina’s Neuroscience Center (2014–2017).
His research focuses on leveraging functional genomics and single-cell transcriptomics to understand cellular trajectories in development and disease contexts, including chronic pain, neuropathy, and viral infections like COVID-19. Key projects include developing RNA/CRISPR-based therapies and optimizing neuronal differentiation from stem cells. His work has been supported by grants such as the NHMRC Ideas Grant (2022) and Cancer Council NSW Project Grant (2019).
Dr Loo teaches Single-Cell Genomics and qPCR modules in university courses. He has received accolades including the 2022 10X Genomics Millennium Science Spatial Pioneers Fellowship and the Dr. John and Anne Chong Fellowship (2018–2022).
Lab and team contributions include collaborations with the Human Cell Atlas and SpatioTemporalOmics Consortium. His research highlights include discovering LRRC15 as a SARS-CoV-2 receptor and elucidating mechanisms in autism-linked UBE3A mutations. He aims to translate findings into therapeutic spin-offs through University initiatives.
