About
Dr. Ling Chin Hwang is a Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry and Academic Lead for Biomedicine at Anglia Ruskin University's School of Medicine, part of the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Social Care. She leads the Biochemistry and Immunology themes for the MBChB Medicine and BSc Medical Science courses. Her research focuses on bacterial cell division, biomolecular interactions, and single-molecule fluorescence microscopy, with a particular interest in understanding how bacterial chromosomes organize and segregate during cell division.
Dr. Hwang holds a PhD from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and completed postdoctoral research at the University of Oxford and the NIH. She joined Anglia Ruskin in 2020 after establishing her research group at the University of Sheffield in 2015. Her work combines biochemistry, biophysics, and microscopy to investigate fundamental biological mechanisms, with potential implications for antimicrobial drug development.
Research highlights include discovering how plasmid partition proteins self-organize to drive DNA segregation in E. coli and studying bacterial chromosome spatial organization. She has supervised multiple PhD students (e.g., Satpal Chodha, Adam Brooks) and undergraduate researchers. Dr. Hwang is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and actively engages in laboratory-based teaching innovation.
Her recent grants include awards from the Society for Applied Microbiology and the Biochemical Society. She is a member of the Biochemical Society and Microbiology Society. Teaching responsibilities include module leadership for Principles of Biomedical Sciences and Specialist Case Studies in the BSc Medical Science program.
