Linda Przybyszewski is an Associate Professor of History and Concurrent Associate Professor of Law at the University of Notre Dame. Her research focuses on the intersection of state power, morality, religion, and cultural practices. She holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University and has authored influential works such as The Lost Art of Dress (2014), a New York Times bestseller on the history of American fashion and consumer culture. Her scholarship also explores legal history, including the role of religious faith in jurisprudence and landmark Supreme Court cases like Plessy v. Ferguson.
Przybyszewski’s interdisciplinary work spans legal, religious, and cultural studies, with recent projects including a book on the 1869 Cincinnati Bible War and articles recognized by prestigious awards. She is affiliated with Gender Studies, Constitutional Studies, Poverty Studies, and the Program in Science, Technology, and Values. Her courses cover legal history, cultural history, the Civil War era, and the sociology of fashion.
Her awards include the Hughes-Gossett Award (2017) for her legal history scholarship and a National Endowment for the Humanities Public Scholar Award (2016). She actively bridges academic and public history through accessible writing and cross-disciplinary teaching.
