About
Lin X. Chen is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Northwestern University, with affiliations at the Argonne National Laboratory. She holds a B.Sc. from Peking University and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Her research focuses on understanding light-matter interactions in molecular and nanoscale systems, employing ultrafast spectroscopy and X-ray techniques to study energy transfer, charge separation, and structural dynamics in contexts such as solar energy conversion, catalysis, and biophysical systems.
Her group investigates photochemical processes in transition metal complexes, organic materials, and biomolecules, with applications to optoelectronics and enzymatic reactions. Key methodological tools include ultrafast optical/X-ray spectroscopy, scattering, and computational modeling. Recent work highlights include studies on spin-vibronic coherence in Pt dimers, exciton dynamics in covalent organic frameworks, and phase transitions in perovskite nanocrystals.
Dr. Chen’s honors include the Mildred Dresselhaus Guest Professorship (2024), AAAS Fellowship (2012), and multiple awards for experimental physical chemistry. Her group has advised over a dozen graduate students and postdocs, with ongoing collaborations across chemistry, physics, and engineering disciplines. The Chen Group operates labs at Northwestern and Argonne, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to energy and materials science.
